Lactation
The General Pediatrics – Lactation Service is staffed by an International Board Certified lactation consultant and a pediatrician with a special interest in breastfeeding. Consultations take place in a dedicated, home-like and comfortable lactation room in the Children’s Pavilion. The clinic enables mothers to receive breastfeeding assistance and medical care for their infant in one convenient location. By supporting the mother, increasing the duration of breastfeeding and promoting a healthy breastfeeding relationship, this collaborative effort of lactation consultation and pediatric medical care facilitates and optimizes the growth and development of patients.
The service addresses:
- Ineffective latch-on or sucking
- Painful nursing
- Engorgement
- Breast pump education
- Feeding multiples (twins and triplets)
- Nutrition concerns
- Pediatric medical care
- Other maternal concerns
Hours of operation
The Lactation Clinic is open on Tuesdays and on an as-needed basis. The lactation room is also available to VCU Medical Center employees who are breastfeeding.
