Endocrinology and metabolism
The Division of Pediatric Endocrinology and Metabolism manages the Center for Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU, the region’s most comprehensive program for children with diabetes and other endocrine disorders. The new center offers medical care, clinical trials, medical nutrition therapy, psychological support, education and support groups all in one convenient location.

Diabetes and related disorders
The center provides comprehensive care for children with:
- Type 1 diabetes (insulin-dependent)
- Type 2 diabetes (non-insulin dependent)
- Abnormal glucose tolerance
- Metabolic syndrome
- Acanthosis nigricans
- Obesity
- Hypoglycemia
- Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
- Elevated cholesterol or triglyceride levels
Diabetes management
The center provides comprehensive care for children with all forms of diabetes. Services include:
- American Diabetes Association (ADA)-recognized diabetes education program
- Clinical trials
- Computerized pump and meter data downloads and interpretation
- Continuous glucose monitoring systems
- Health education
- Insulin pumps
- Medical nutrition therapy (to treat diabetes, hyperlipidemia, obesity, failure to thrive)
- Point-of-care testing for hemoglobin A1C
- Psychological support
- Support groups and group classes
- Type 1 diabetes research programs

Healthy lifestyle weight management and diabetes prevention
The center provides multidisciplinary healthy lifestyle management and diabetes prevention through:

- Self-paced computer learning
