"There are so many opportunities in research, performance improvement and education that are waiting to be taken advantage of and lots of resources are available to help use those opportunities. I am working on a clinical research project and I have mentors in the Department of Pediatrics, Department of Biostatistics and the Chemistry Lab that have guided me. Because I am very interested in teaching, for my quality improvement project, I am working on a pediatric mock code curriculum for the residents.”
Jenny Fox, M.D.
Fellow, PGY-4
Division of Neonatal Medicine
“I’m excited to be a part of the neonatology fellowship program. I chose to stay here after residency because of the wonderful faculty and the ability to take an active part in the growth of our department, in areas of research and resident education. I had also seen firsthand, as a parent, the wonderful care our NICU provides. I wanted to be a part of the team and provide that care to other patients. Early in my fellowship training, I have had opportunities to make my own decisions and test my clinical skills, knowing that supervision and/or assistance from an attending was readily available 24-hours a day. As a resident, the research mentorship was excellent, and I am excited to continue pursuing and developing research projects as a fellow.”
Michael Foxworth, M.D.
Fellow, PGY-5
Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases
“I completed my residency training and stayed for an additional year as a chief resident here at CHoR. Having worked closely with our ID Department over the past four years in different settings, I knew that this was an environment of learning with a collegial atmosphere.”
“There are many opportunities in our department that involve bench, translational, clinical and epidemiological research. Faculty advisers are helpful in working with fellows to find the scholarly activities that best fit their interests and future careers. There are multiple clinical experiences that make this program great.”

Marieka Helou, M.D.
Fellow, PGY-6
Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology
"I did my residency at MCV and was excited to stay as a Pediatric Hematology/Oncology fellow. The program is very flexible and always listens to our concerns. I am also getting an MPH as part of my training and everyone has been very supportive. It is a small program so you have a lot of responsibility and get plenty of guidance. I also love living in Richmond!"
Mamatha Kambalapalli, M.B.B.S.
Fellow, PGY-4
Division of Pediatric Endocrinology and Metabolism
“I am happy to be part of the pediatric endocrinology fellowship program. The program puts an emphasis on fellow training and research activities. This is one of the major strengths of our program. The endocrinology fellowship program director is fully committed to ensure that the fellow's training needs are met. There are many research opportunities in our division including basic, translational and clinical research. There is also ample exposure to a wide variety of clinical cases. These aspects, along with an accommodating faculty, make fellowship training an enjoyable experience.”

“I am happy to be a part of this program ... it provides ample clinical and research opportunities for trainees to become competent neonatologists.
“I like the balance between the clinical responsibilities and time for research and studies.”
Brant Ward, M.D., Ph.D.
Physician-scientist, PGY-4
Division of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology
“I am in the process of completing a Physician Scientist fellowship, which allows me to perform basic science research with some of the world’s experts in mast cell biology. This certainly has enhanced my training in allergy and immunology and my desire to continue learning.
“The allergy and immunology training program provides great clinical experience in both adult and pediatric practice, and the attendings all have significant basic science research experience that they are able to impart to us as trainees.”
